NAC or N-acetyl L-cysteine is a modified form of cysteine attached to an acetyl group. Cysteine is one of the endogenous amino acids (that is, those that the body can synthesize on its own) that contains sulfur. Due to its specific structure, it is a very reactive amino acid, it binds many toxic substances, so it is helpful in detoxification processes.
L-cysteine (along with glutamine and glycine) is also essential in the synthesis of glutathione, a powerful internal antioxidant. It is also involved in the synthesis of proteins, enzymes and coenzymes.
